WARNING: This is probably going to sound preachy.
Every Monday this summer at 6 p.m., I've found myself on a well-worn path to my favorite yoga class. Each session is like a ritualistic dance with the same sequence of poses, but it’s more than just a workout—it’s my sacred hour of self-preservation. Now, let’s be clear: my week might not be grueling (hello, living at Dad’s and interning), but this class is my little slice of sanity.
Let’s face it, my days are a whirlpool of overthinking, romanticizing, and sometimes wallowing in the could-have-beens. I replay my past blunders like a movie marathon, always wondering how I could have been cooler, smarter, or just a bit less of a pushover.
And here’s the kicker: every single Monday, our instructor preaches about the power of presence. Sounds like a cliché, right? But here's the thing—she’s onto something. Being present isn’t just a lofty ideal; it’s a simple, actionable thing that can change everything. When I’m truly in the now, it’s like someone hits the reset button on my stress levels. More laughs, less anxiety.
Don’t get me wrong—my brain still goes on tangents about past mishaps and future uncertainties. I’m not claiming to be perfect. But making a conscious effort to stay grounded in the present has made my summer a lot more enjoyable.
At the end of the day, we can’t rewrite history or predict the future. But we can make the most of right now. So as we inch into August, I’m taking a page from my Monday yoga book: Stop dwelling on what was and worrying about what might be. Embrace the present, and let it be the place where you truly flourish.
Here's to living in the moment and finding joy in the here and now. 🧘♀️
